Cinematic Headshot Help

Hello my name is Don and I purchased the "The Cinematic Headshot". I'm looking forward to mastering this style but I'm running into a technical difficulty. First, I'm a little confused about if Dylan said his flashes were set on ETTL/TTL or manual. I set my flash to manual. Second, when Dylan was shooting Maurice, at one point he shot at f/3.2 ISO 100 1/1600 and the lashes on full power. The results were the background was under control but low flash power on Maurice. To get more light on Maurice Dylan bumped up the ISO to 320-400 and there was more light on the Maurice. This is the issue I'm having. I've done pretty much the same thing as far as settings go. I had my flash on HSS at full power and when I shot at 1/160 the fired with more then enough flash power. When I raised the shutter up to control the background and bump up the ISO for more light on my subject, I still got no flash power out of my flash.

Hey Don! Sorry for the confusion. Your flashes need to be set to TTL...if you are using the pocketwizard setup you can set the flashes to manual on the AC3 Zone controller which is what I do so I can manually control the flash power...however, the flashes still need to be on TTL because that is how the pocketwizard a communicate the HSS info back and forth between the camera. This should allow your flashes to sync properly. Also regarding ISO...speed lights work best starting with the camera's lowest Native ISO... At the time with my D700, 200 was the lowest I could go, so raising the ISO from there isn't dramatic, but other cameras have lower native ISO settings like 100 so results Mary vary. Keep me posted on if this works for you. Also there is a group on Facebook I'm very active in, the link should be in the email receipt from Fstoppers when you purchased the tutorial! I try to get here often but between the Facebook group and this group I find I get stuck more on FB, but I'll be checking in more frequently here from now on too.

Dylan thanks for the response. I requested to join the FB group. So the images below is my set up and a image with the flash set to Ettl, triggers set to tx & rx as well as HSR and a result of the flash still not registering the HSS function. I may have a bad flash?

I could be wrong (but I don't think so in this case), the PW Plus III triggers are not capable of HSS/FP Sync. Even though your flash is set to (e)TTL, no dice. You need the FlexTT5/MiniTT1 trigger setup, or some other triggers that will talk true TTL communications including High Speed Sync, also known as Focal Plane Sync in Nikon land. The PlusIII tirggers are purely manual (aka dumb) triggers. They don't speak TTL.

Chris is correct, the triggers you have are not compatabile with HSS. The flex system is what you need, or I see you are using a yonguno they have a HSS sync trigger/receiver option that is more affordable than pocketwizard. I believe it's the YN622C and coordinating receiver that's works with HSS

Thank you guys for all the input. If a photographers bank acct could talk lol! Yeah Chris, I discovered that yesterday thanks. Dylan thanks, I purchased a set of the YN-622c last night, I wasn't going to be defeated! Some test images coming soon.
