Greetings From Maryland!

Hi Everyone, my name is Jake and I live in the Washington DC metro area. I'm a self-proclaimed headshot junkie that refuses rehab! :-) I love people-tography, but have always come back to headshots. They are the images that truly make me the happiest. Love Peter Hurley and bought his AOTH tutorial here on Fstoppers. About 6 months ago I saw Dylan's "Cinematic Headshot" Fstoppers trailer and was blown away by the look, which I particularly enjoy. Then, a couple of weeks ago I did an outdoor headshot of the lady I've uploaded. It was with a large shoot-through umbrella to camera right and when I was post-processing it really sparked the flame for the CH tutorial so here I am, 3:00 in the morning downloading the tutorial, joining this discussion and his group on Facebook! I've done inside headshots using Alien Bees, but never on location with just Speedlights. The 3 shots with the dark background are my first try at it (done with a paid client, don't try that at home, kids! LOL). I didn't want to buy new gear so I made a bag with things I had already: 2 Canon 600 EX-RT speedlights, PocketWizards with AC-3 Zone Controller. The main light is Wescott small Rapid Box and the kicker is a speedlight modifier kit I bought years ago. I have the white beauty dish with spot grid inserted. So I am getting back into headshots as much as I can...thanks for reading and I look forward to learning much more here!

Jake

Can anyone help explain the dark background banding? I processed in LR5 only then exported as JPG. Help! Thanks!

Hey man, I'm also in the DC area. You can try exporting srgb for web to help with colors, but it's possible that you just need to add some grain to the background to get rid of it. If you have a calibrated monitor it it doesn't show up there, I wouldn't worry about it. Phones won't show as well anyways
