Jeff Bagwell's picture

The view behind me turned out to be better than what was in my frame.

I struggle with Black and White edits. This shot was a handheld shot with my backup camera. I was shooting a lake and turned around to see this. I tried to add some depth to the forest. As well as mood in the clouds.

Indeed. This could have been fantastic but in fact, like you said, needs improvement! Your composition isn't bad, I'd say a little more depth of field and distance away from the subject would've been ideal. Further, your missing 1-2 stops of light, which = lost highlights & shadow detail. Further, I'm assuming this was shot in broad daylight, hence a flat appearance. But a few post adjustments and virtual copies would suffice. As far as the camera being your "backup" is concerned, is irrelevant. "Handholding" is not advisable, even for all the handholding-savants out there, lol, TRIPOD, TRIPOD, TRIPOD is what I say, regardless of shutter speed & or focal length. So, I highly suggest some more post-production work. Have you downloaded the free Google Nik Collection? Cheers, mate!🍻

Thanks for your input. Yes, I have the Nik Collection. I used Color Efex to adjust the dynamic contrast on this image. Maybe a touch to heavy? I mentioned handheld only because my tripod was in use with my main body. Taking a series of brackets facing a lake the direction.
