Thorsten Westheider's picture

Path of Light

Another picture I shot in the neighbourhood last week. Really need to get out again this weekend, but the weather forecast is not exciting at all.

Anyway, this is my idea of autumn colors :-)

Love the colors Thorsten funny what u say about the weather. I am in california and we cant wait for some cloud or rain for some detail in the sky (although i appreciate that white low cloud is uninteresting too). Get out them wellies and a good raincoat, and that polarizer and go shoot!

Thanks Loretta! I had to smile, because that's just the thing: We haven't had any rain worth mentioning for over half a year and it shows - small rivers have already dried out, you can cross them wearing just your socks and never get wet. We have temperatures of up to 19°C - in winter, that's at least 10°C higher than any year before this one. We already got fresh strawberries again and I kid you not.

It's the reason why I can still shoot fall pictures at this time of year. The weather forecast is overcast skies, that doesn't mean it's gonna rain, we've had dark skies a couple of times but it hardly ever rains.

What that means for my photography is, I can't shoot sunrise/sunset, I can't shoot waterfalls and I can't shoot the night sky. That doesn't leave much to pick from. The only thing I'm looking forward to this weekend is my telescope, which is due to arrive today or maybe tomorrow.

Yes climate change is scary. The birds, and the trees are particularly weird this year here too. We had yet another fire a few miles away. I hate this but i guess we will have to learn to live with it. Fun getting your telescope. I worked out how to attch my camera to mind. Not sure its a tracker though have to do more reading about it.

I was in California until a few months ago and now back in Virginia we can't get away from the "moody" weather. lol

Really nice image Thorsten. I look at Autumn colours on your side of the world and while I have always been impressed by shots I have seen by people like Robert Glenn Ketchum, a lot of the Autumn shots here don't seem to be as vivid as what we get in Australia. Maybe I am a bit heavy with saturation and on my canon 600d I usually shoot in the landscape picture mode which is for me close to velvia film.

Thanks Geoff! I shoot in whatever orientation the scene asks for, in woodland that is quite often portrait, for obvious reasons. As for saturation, I used to overdo it myself, but nowadays I try hard for a more natural look. Nature is beautiful as it is, no need to stress the eyes with color that isn't actually there.

Great autumn photo - well done.

Thank you very much!

Very nice! Defines "autumn" quite nicely! Wonderful composition!

Thanks Red! I had already packed for the morning and was on the way out, but couldn't skip on this shot so I got the camera from the backpack again. Can't say I regret that decision.

meh its ok i guess...lol you killed it i was trying to get this last week after seeing your last post like this and i found the perfect light coming through but absolutely no subject i was bummed. starburst is nice color of the backlit leaves brings out the autumn color shadow play is nice even the shadows created leading lines for you great capture thorsten. not sure about that WB though hahaha
