Justin Odisho is a prolific video maker who also shares great video-editing orientated tutorials on YouTube. In this video he discusses how to get clients and how to build your video portfolio with Daniel Schiffer.
The objective is to first get a portfolio, one you are proud of sharing with the world. Once you've done that, the second step is sharing it with people who will potentially buy in to your style and what you are able to do regarding video production, and book you for their projects.
It’s one thing to make great videos and having it uploaded on to Vimeo and YouTube. It’s another to build the social network, getting the best domain for your personal brand, and to share your work with clients.
At first you’ll most likely send a cold email to clients with the hope of them clicking the link to view your past work, and because they liked what they saw, book you for projects they have.
But with an email, it’s easy to get ignored. So the next step will be to physically go to places that contain potential work you would like to do, to knock on the door and present yourself as a videographer that’ll like to shoot a video for them. Have a business card or some way for them to check your work out and give it to them.
You’ll be amazed at what a difference it makes to physically interact with someone compared to an email.
Here is Schiffer’s video regarding getting clients.
Conclusion
Get the portfolio; shoot for free and have something to show. This is your personal brand you’re talking about, so it’s important that you like your own work, and feel proud of it. Secondly, go meet the people you want to produce videos for.
