The Ernst-Ludwig-Haus was built as a communal studio building according to plans by Joseph Maria Olbrich, the only trained architect and the central figure in the artists' group. Peter Behrens originally only worked as a painter and graphic artist in accordance with his training. The foundation stone was laid on March 24, 1900. The studio building was also the artists' colony's ceremonial building. In the middle of the main floor was the meeting and party room with paintings by Paul Bürck, to the left and right of which were three artists' studios. Two artists' apartments and utility rooms were located in the basement. The six-metre-high colossal figures "Man and Woman" or "Strength and Beauty" are by Ludwig Habich and flank the entrance, which lies in a portal niche with gilded plant ornaments. Above the entrance is the inscription "SEINE WELT ZEIGE DER KÜNSTLER - DIE NIEMALS WAR NOCH JEMALS SEIN WIRD" by Hermann Bahr. The artists' houses were grouped around the studio building. At the end of the 1980s, the building and the furnishings of the Darmstadt Artists' Colony Museum were reconstructed.
