Borrowed Bodies

This portrait brings several representations of the body into a single frame: the figure holding the dolls, the old framed portrait and the blurred body in the foreground. I used shallow focus and foreground obstruction so the viewer has to look through one body toward another rather than read the scene as a conventional portrait. The domestic setting keeps the image familiar while the dolls introduce a manufactured version of the human form. The resulting frame sits between memory, identity and the ways we learn to look at bodies.
