Over the past few years, the team at SmokyMountains.com have created a map showing time predictions for peak fall colors in the United States. The 2016 version of this interactive map is now live just in time to make those camping reservations or other travel plans to get the best photos of the season.
In order to predict these changes of the season, data is pulled from the National Weather Service’s historical temperatures, historical precipitation, forecast temperatures, forecast precipitation, historical leaf peak trends, and peak observation trends according to a 500px ISO article published last year.
The interactive map is made to be simple to use in order to find the information you need. All you do is drag the slider below the map to different dates over the period of time between August 26 and November 11. The map is broken down by counties in the continental United States which provides easy visual planning for particular areas of the states. While the tool admittedly can’t be 100 percent accurate, it does provide a fast and simple way to keep your photography trips on track this autumn season.
