Apple's Creator Studio Update Brings Generate Fill to Pixelmator Pro

Pixelmator Pro is getting Generate Fill, which lets you circle part of a photo, type the change you want, and have the app rebuild that area to match the light, perspective, and texture around it. It arrives in November as part of a free update to Apple Creator Studio, alongside built-in MotionVFX effects in Final Cut Pro and new AI assistants in Logic Pro, Keynote, Pages, and Numbers.

Apple announced the update on Tuesday and calls it its most exciting since the subscription launched. In Pixelmator Pro, you can mark the area roughly with a circle or use the app's Free Selection, Quick Selection, or Magnetic Selection tools when you need a precise edge. The app then generates the new content, upscales it with built-in Super Resolution so the new area holds up at large sizes, and either merges it into the existing layer or drops it in as a new layer with a mask you can keep refining. "Pixelmator Pro's sophisticated fill capabilities now let users completely reimagine any part of an image," said Brent Chiu-Watson, Apple's senior director of Worldwide Product Marketing for Apps and iCloud.

Final Cut Pro for Mac now has MotionVFX built in, which puts thousands of templates, titles, transitions, and graphics in the app, along with rotoscoping, tracking, and color grading tools. The Content Hub brings Apple-curated stock video, photos, and backgrounds into Final Cut Pro, so you can fill a gap in an edit without leaving the timeline. Any still image in a project can open straight in Pixelmator Pro, and your changes save back to the project automatically, with no reimporting. Final Cut Pro also adds text-to-image generation, more keyframe easing options, a way to detach clips from the primary storyline, and transcription in 23 more languages. Motion gains MotionVFX plug-ins for 3D camera tracking, color grading, and one-click selection, and Compressor can now encode Cinematic mode video from the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo.

Logic Pro for Mac gets a beta assistant built on Apple's own models and OpenAI that can help you begin a new song, prepare a vocal track from one request, or refine a project in progress. Its redesigned Browser gathers loops, instruments, and patches in one place and tags added sounds automatically through on-device audio analysis, Stem Splitter can now separate drums, and the app takes on Apple's Liquid Glass design. Keynote, Pages, and Numbers get a beta assistant of their own that reads the document you're working in, plus Model Context Protocol support so outside AI agents and tools can read and edit those files.

Generative fill has become a standard part of photo editing since Adobe brought Generative Fill to Photoshop in 2023, and Pixelmator Pro now has its own version built on top of the selection tools its users already know. Apple announced it was acquiring Pixelmator in November 2024, and this update shows how tightly the app now ties into Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Freeform, which gains Pixelmator Pro editing in December. Generated patches in some tools come out softer than the photo around them, and Apple says Pixelmator Pro runs Super Resolution on its generated content to avoid that. If you shoot both stills and video on a Mac, the round trip between Final Cut Pro and Pixelmator Pro is the change you'll feel in daily work, since fixing a frame or a graphic no longer means exporting, editing, and reimporting it.

The update reaches the App Store in November at no cost for existing subscribers. Apple Creator Studio costs $12.99 per month or $129 per year, with a one-month free trial for new subscribers and three months free with a new Mac or qualifying iPad, and education pricing is $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year. Pixelmator Pro is also still sold as a one-time purchase for $49.99, alongside Final Cut Pro at $299.99 and Logic Pro at $199.99.
