An endangered California Least Tern rests on its nest in the sand. Just a few feet away from the roped off area are walkers, surfers, and sunbathers enjoying a day at the beach. California Least Terns have had notoriously difficult breeding seasons here in Southern California. These birds breed against the odds and are affected by human disturbance, predation on eggs by coyotes, and even a drone crash in 2021 that caused thousands of terns to abandon their nests.
