After toiling in the fields or other demanding jobs from sun up to sundown, one would work up an appetite for supper, rest, and fellowship. All the men wore hats to shade their heads from the sun and other elements. Before supper, you would hang up your straw hat with the other men and wash your hands before sitting at the dinner table. Even a good hat rests when the day is done.
