The Other, Bigger Pandemic Hitting Photography: Part One

The WHO says approximately 450 million people currently suffer from mental health and neurological disorders. That’s over three-and-a-half times the number that have ever had COVID-19. Within the photographic industry, the rates of mental illness are far worse than in society as a whole.

First picking up a camera at age 7, Ivor progressed from using that TLR, via SLRs, to digital and, recently, back to film again.

For enjoyment, he shoots mostly seascapes but dabbles in wildlife and street photography, too. Professionally, he is usually engaged for shooting business portraits, events, real estate, and products, plus he keeps his hand in shooting a few weddings each year, though he is trying to give those up.

Photo restoration is another area of work he finds rewarding and is currently carrying out a project preserving and restoring hundreds of old photos dating back to the mid-1800s.

However, he gets the most joy from encouraging others to excel in the art. Several of his clients have gone on to become successful professional photographers.

Ivor also writes and is not scared to challenge commonly held misbeliefs about photography. He often challenges the art's conventions to generate discussion.

He has lived in England, Scotland, Tanzania, Spain, and back in England again. He's happily married and has an adult son. He plays guitar, sings very badly, and occasionally writes songs. Ivor enjoys hillwalking, sailing, and canoeing (although he rarely gets the chance), and wishes he had more time to dabble in the dark room.
