While Canon has always made some of the world's most impressive lenses, they really kicked it into another gear when the RF mount came along. It seems they have no intention of stopping, with another impressive lens on the way soon.
While Canon has mostly filled out its "big white" lineup, as its supertelephoto prime lenses are known, the two shortest options, the 200mm f/2L and 300mm f/2.8L, are still missing. It seems we will be getting one of those soon, but with a major upgrade. Canon Rumors is reporting that in a few weeks, we will likely see the Canon RF 100-300mm f/2.8L IS USM lens. Such a lens is not unprecedented, as both Sigma and Nikon make 120-300mm f/2.8 lenses (I have the Sigma and love its versatility).
A patent emerged for such a lens a few months ago and even had a 1.4x teleconverter, which would make it a 140-420mm f/4 lens when engaged, though it is not clear if that will be included in the final version. The lens is rumored to retail for $9,499, and while that is expensive, it is in line with the Nikon's price and seems reasonable when one considers the EF 300mm f/2.8 prime retails for $6,099. Surely, such a lens would be tremendously popular among sports and wildlife photographers, who need those wide apertures to maintain fast shutter speeds but would certainly appreciate the versatility of a zoom.
Finally, if it’s as sharp as the current EF 200 - 400, then this will be a justified price range … B&H … consumers are standing $BUY 👍
I used to have big (or expensive) lens lust. But for almost a year, I’ve shot so many fantastic, sharp shots with my “slow” 800 F11, many with fantastic bokeh, and even in low light. All you need is a tripod, and good technique. Don’t get me wrong, I’d like to have a “little faster” lens, with rotating collar, full frame focusing etc, (a glorified 800 F11…. But maybe F8 instead 😉) and for that, I’d probably pay $2000, or $2500. But honestly, I wouldn’t pay $10K for a lens now > if I could afford it.
On top of all that, “this” $10K lens would rarely be long enough for me anyway.
Although this sounds fantastic, I'd rather like to see a new RF version of the EF 300mm f4 IS L, slightly smaller, slightly better IS, slightly better IQ.
I don't see Fstoppers as being Canon-centric. One of the main writers, Ivor, is very much against Canon, to the point where he will get a dig in at Canon any chance he gets in his articles or comments. And I see more articles and "announcements" here for 3rd party lenses in Sony E mount than I see for Canon lenses.
And Canon still is a huge force in the camera and lens market. If Sony sells more cameras and more lenses, it is by a small margin. Sony sales certainly don't "dwarf" Canon sales, as you claim.
