Everyone remembers the 2012 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Cover. It brought a lot of discussion for the wrong reasons. If you don't, you should refresh your memory here. This time around, the 2013 cover also features Kate Upton. Although it is much better, it seems that some people are still unhappy with it because she's the cover model again. At least the focus went away from the processing of the image.

I've seen mixed opinions on the cover itself. However, I always wonder what goes on during the shoot to get to the end result. Here's a behind the scenes video where Kate talks about the shoot with a glimpse of what she went through to get to the final image.

With all things considered, how do you think she did? What would you have done differently had you been in charge of the final image?

what really bothers me about this picture is the bottom half. The bikini is frumpy. its not pulled up right, makes her look pregnant. and the lines of the boat rails are uneven and distracting. it looks like a snapshot, which is what it was.

She's known for having dumpy hips/pelvis.

That being said, she's still absurdly hot.

I'm with you. She IS hot but sucky at modeling. Her look is only good for bikini stuff. Go look up her fashion shots. WACK! But she is big boob'd so SI is great for her. Now lets talk about that award winning Cat Daddy video!!!! It won awards with me.

seriously!? makes her look pregnant!? are you fucking kidding me... apparently you have never seen the body of a pregnant woman, sultan ghahtani.

Wait - there are rails in this picture?

I don't think 99% of their readers give a shit about the uneven rails or snapshot quality of the photo. It's really not even in the realm of critique. The image is nothing more than a conduit to see Kate Upton, and for that it's successful. The only way for the photographer to fail in the shoot would be if they produced a blurry or unclear image.

Or censor the only 2 things that will sell this magazine...

It fails...even though she is attractive.

Antarctica has what's possibly the last intact eco system on the planet..and we are doing fashion shoots there now?

Hopefully they picked up their trash on the way out.

You're an idiot.

Hilarious.

and she is wearing a made in Canada "Canada Goose" parka. Not looking  frumpy at all eh? And a much better use for Canada geese than clogging up jet engines.

Image is relevant.

Yup

just pose for playboy already

She looks gorgeous as always.

How many people paused the video at 0.35?

THANK YOU

It would be interesting to see these photos pre-photoshop and how much work had to be done to remove the effect of "cold" on her skin. I have done enough winter shoots to know that it is near impossible for a model to control how her skin reacts to extreme cold, nor can she change shivering and such.

Also, for the life of me, I can't figure out why they would spend all the money and go to Antartica to make THIS shot?  I haven't seen any of the ones inside the mag but if they are anything like the cover they could have easily shot the images in a studio and composited the cover.

My friend had a great theory about this. The Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue is an anachronism in the era of internet porn, and the internet in general. Why would you buy this magazine when there are millions of pictures of beautiful nude and semi-nude women available for free at the click of a mouse?

Sports Illustrated is hoping to compete by selling the spectacle of Kate Upton in Antarctica. Your local porn peddler doesn't have the budget to shoot in Antarctica, now does he? Frankly, I don't think this is going to work out for them. If people want Antarctica, they'll buy National Geographic.

i could have photoshopped her into a better antarctica scene...from a photographic aspect, this picture sucks.

This is SI's first swimsuit issue with "3hree" models on the cover yeah?! (And one of the models is being overshadowed a bit by the set of twin camera hogs!)

As an English person, can somebody explain to me what Sports Illustrated is? Is it a soft porno mag like Nuts or Zoo, or is it a sports magazine with 'real' articles? The only thing I know it for is the Swimsuit Issue which seems to be a poorly veiled attempt to let guys buy a titty mag without believing they are buying a titty mag?

Yes it is a sports magazine. the largest sports magazine in the US i believe.  the swimsuit edition is just a special edition in the winter each year when the sports season is at its slowest (the reason it was originally made at least)

Unfortunately for me, there are no such models in my area of work !!!
I would be way more famous with such gorgeous girls !

I really like the image, It seems more natural then what is usually found on the cover of magazines. I am so effing tired of seeing these super thin, unhuman photoshopped models.

It definitely looks more like a snap shot...reather than a carefully composed shot!
