Behind The Scenes: Shooting JB And The Moonshine Band

Matthew Hogan, a talented photographer and videographer from Tyler, Texas, shot country band, JB and the Mooonshine band. He not only shot the band for a promotional photoshoot, but for their music video, as well. Using Alienbee lighting, a Nikon D700 and a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 lens he composited the individual band members together for the final image.

"We shot with a Nikon D700, and the 50mm f/1.4 lens primarily for that particular shoot. Lighting wise, we used an Alienbees 1600 and octobox near full power as the key light, with an AB800 as a rim light, near half power, with the sun as a fill, as well. The cyber syncs were used all around as triggers." -Matthew Hogan

For the music video Matthew used converted Alienbees as continuous lighting with Alienbees diffusers (a different way of using Alienbees for sure), a Canon 7D with a Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L and a Nikkor 85mm f/1.4 lens. He also used a Redrock Micro Follow Focus and Rails.

Its good work, but the loud hard rock music for a country band shoot is hard to comprehend.

That's because I'm not a big fan of country music (even though we end up shooting that all the time, haha). Thanks for the kind words though! :-)

Great output Matthew. What's the size of the octobox?
