One lesson I learned the hard way a few years ago is the importance of keeping a very close eye on foliage and weather forecasts. The period of maximum color is normally fairly narrow (often on the order of a couple weeks), but a few years ago, due to some unusual weather, we only had about three days of good color (and only one where it was not raining horribly) before a lot of the leaves dropped. Luckily, I scrambled into position on the morning of good weather and got a few decent shots, but had I been a bit more proactive and kept better tabs on the forecasts, I could have had a plan in place to visit several locations in an efficient manner and come home with a lot more shots.
