The Megadap Leica M Lens to Canon RF-Mount Autofocus Adapter sits between a manual focus lens and a camera body, adds motors and electronics, and lets the camera's own autofocus system do the work. It runs on Canon, which is unusual given how tightly Canon has guarded its autofocus protocol from third parties.
Anthony Gugliotta tests the Megadap adapter on a Canon C50 with M mount glass, including TTArtisan and other vintage-style lenses. The adapter is not a passive tube. As soon as it mounts, a motor engages, physically pushing the lens elements forward and back to hit focus. Gugliotta leaves the focus ring at infinity and never touches it during recording, letting the camera track subjects on its own. The autofocus itself is the camera's native system, so the tracking quality comes straight from Canon rather than from any workaround.
Aperture is where things get manual. The ring has to be set by hand, and Gugliotta walks through the bundled software that lets you save four lens profiles over a cable connection. A switch on the adapter transmits EXIF data, so a side button cycles through preset aperture values that get baked into the metadata. Matching the aperture setting to the lens also helps the autofocus perform at its best, though it does not need to match exactly. That communication between body and lens is the part that makes the whole system possible, and the part that makes its existence on Canon so surprising.
The tradeoffs are real. The motor is noisy compared to Canon L series glass, audible enough that an on-camera or nearby mic will pick it up. The system is built specifically for M mount, so PL mount cinema lenses have no equivalent, likely because their focus mechanisms move differently. There is a weight limit too, with the documentation warning against anything over 500 g, since the motor has to physically shift the elements. On the C50 footage, the tracking holds, but the motors move a little sporadically, and pairing that with a vintage lens that breathes on the edges makes frame jitter easier to spot.
This lands in the middle of a wider push to give old glass a second life on modern bodies. Vintage M mount and rangefinder lenses have become collector targets partly because their rendering looks different from clinical modern optics, and until recently the price of that look was giving up autofocus entirely. LiDAR rigs like the DJI Focus Pro solved that for video shooters willing to build out a system, but they add bulk and cost. An adapter that leans on the camera's own phase-detect autofocus points at a lighter path, and it fits a specific person well: someone sitting on sought-after manual lenses who wants to shoot stills or a locked-off talking head without a focus puller. If you swap lenses constantly or shoot fast-moving subjects, the four-profile limit and the motor behavior make it a harder sell, and knowing that upfront saves you a frustrating afternoon.
