We Capture the Fastest Known Thing in the World and Make It Still

Have you ever thought about it? Light is the fastest traveling thing that we know to exist. Joe Hanson, Ph.D, presents ideas for the YouTube Channel "It's OK To Be Smart." He takes us through the history of light.

Ibn Al-Haythem discovered that the Greek methodology might be wrong and that light existed outside our bodies, which sounds obvious now, but it was a big step in the right direction. Until that point, we thought light came out of our eyes and lit everything we saw. Astronomers also noticed that light had a speed and Newton started breaking it down using prisms, coming to the conclusion that white light is all colors combined, and if something is a certain color, let's use a red apple as an example, it's absorbing all the other color rays and only reflecting red for our eyes and brains to interpret.

It's important to learn as much as possible about the things that make up the industry and art form we pursue. If you think about it, the light we use to capture the stills and video is also used in every industry. Nothing will work without it and nothing will exist. It's up to us as a creative industry to know this and to show others how amazing light really is with the images and video we make.

Philosophy makes me so happy. When you really look at the metaphysical and ontological nature of light, you begin to appreciate just how much power the sun has, and how profound an effect it has on our perception of reality.

I agree Andrew, it makes me appreciate it. The way the light shines through clouds, reflects and just is. It's perfect.
