First attempt at surfing photography. Shot at Pipeline on Oahu.

With a tighter crop I'd be tempted to move from 3 to 4, lovely water colours and light on the spray.

Thanks Roger! I think you’re right about the crop. Unfortunately I didn’t have a lens longer than 300mm, and this is already cropped in a bit. Don’t think I can crop much more without significantly degrading image quality. Next time I’ll try to find a longer lens!

Great shot Josh. Finally a surf shot on here of a better wave. haha. Good colors, the dark sky in the back is a nice color to highlight the wave and offshore spray.
Stay out there, and keep getting some more! Or pull some Clark Little action, and get in the shorebreak :-p

Thanks Daniel—not my typical genre, but I definitely want to try it again! I usually get out to Hawaii a couple times a year, though not always during big wave season. Haha I think I’ll leave the shorebreak to the pros—at least until I can find an underwater housing that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Pipeline a “holy place” for surfers and what a place for starting surf photography!,. The lip of the wave is at its best but nice pic. BW should work very well too.

Thanks Alexis! This was the first time I got to see Pipeline during big wave season, but hopefully not the last. I’ve actually thought about B+W for all my shots that day, but loved the color in the water too much to go in that direction—I’ll have to give it a try and see how it looks.
