This was my first try at dance photography. I met the dancer on a video production and got in touch with her regarding a photoshoot. We created a couple of images with different outfits, poses, backgrounds and light sets. The jumping shot, my favorite of the series, was one I had planned for later in the day, so she was fully warmed up.
I used a big rectangular softbox from the top left as key. She is facing it. Additionally, I used another big rectangular softbox from above and just bit of fill from the front left with a big octa. All strobe to freeze the movement. The rest was her getting the jump right and me timing the shot. I had some friends jump around when I tested the light sets, so I figured out I prefer timing one shot over spraying and praying. There is no massive Photoshop on this one. I had to clean up some hair, besides that it was mostly a basic retouch.

I take a ton of Dance photos. If this was a first try, nailed it.

Thank you. It is one of my all time favorites, so far.

Really cool shot! The pose works so well with the lighting!

Thank you. In fact I readjusted the balance of the flash power between the main and the top light after the first couple of shots. I am glad how it turned out.

The color of the dancer's dress works out well with the background to make it stand out. Perfect action captured.
