This photo was part of a still-life assignment given me at my university. I composited four photos: one of each glass, the background, and the scene.

This was my first try and I'd love some pointers/critiques.

Shot on A7rIII with the Sony FE 50mm 1.8 lens.

I'm sure you're looking more for a critique regarding lighting, and for that I can't help you much. Looks fine to me though. The hardest part for me with still-life photography is the selection and arrangement of elements. Some of the early Dutch still-life painters came up with some pretty weird stuff. Decaying fruits and vegetables aren't really my cup of tea. But I wonder what strawberries, oranges and champagne have to do with each other? Especially stacked like in a bin at the grocery store rather than at home on a table. Seems like a strange combination. Wouldn't the image be more compelling if the elements were more compatible... wine, bread and cheese perhaps? Anything that has a more natural fit. And staging the composition without looking overly staged.

Thank you! Your feedback is much appreciated. I'll focus on making natural-looking compositions as I do more still life.

i dunno, it was supposed to be staged photo, but the first thing that actually got my thought was: "shouldn't the bottle be emptier?"... haha. I mean if they poured that much. I get cheese and wine maybe, but I think they are trying to sell this is a sweet wine, and your going to taste those elements. Another complaint I would have is the fruit actually covers the bottle label. A third comment would be the lower lighting, I think they call it "underlighting", in products and portraits this can be critical and sometimes calls for a reflector or a specific light, might be tricky too with the glass.

I think you're spot-on about underlighting, definitely agree that easing up those shadows will improve the image. Thank you!

btw Ed: It's not wine it's Sparkling Juice. However I couldn't find that brand that included Strawberry. Maybe Griffin can set me straight on that one: https://www.martinellis.com/products/sparkling-blush-cherry-25-4-fl-oz/ I found Apple-Cherry, and another pairing.

You're right, it's a classic Martinelli's apple cider. I wanted an analogous color set with some red, and my composition came down to what looked tastiest at the grocery store 😁
