Early morning on October 6th 2017, I was documenting the annual red deer rut in my local nature reserve. I located this big male after listening for bellows and waited patiently for the first light to illuminate the forest. Unfortunately, some younger males were a bit too impatient to wait for the sun, and decided to try their luck with some of the females the big male was keeping to himself. It didn't take long for the stag to launch full speed towards one of the younger males which was standing just to my right. I was caught by surprise and jumped behind a nearby tree to capture the action. My camera at the time was a Canon EOS 5Ds R; a resolution monster but with a more than questionable ISO performance above 400. As I was using the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6, and I needed to freeze the action, I had no choice but to crank up the ISO to 6400, which, as expected, turned the file into total mush. After lots of cleaning in post, I managed to get a usable file, good enough to share with others what I saw that morning. If this was to happen again tomorrow, I probably wouldn't even think twice about cranking my ISO to 6400 or above on my Canon R3!

You did great with what you had to work with.
Thank you! I've photographed the rut every year since then, and I am still waiting for the next opportunity. Fingers crossed!
