In 1974, Mary Helton, a white-oak basket maker who lived in an isolated valley in Appalachian Virginia, prepared a strip of white oak while one of her chickens watched from the back of her sofa. Mary was discovered by members of a craft cooperative in Abingdon, VA. She didn't believe her baskets would sell for very much. She was wrong. They were priceless. Photograph by Bill Blanton.
