I shot this last month during the Southbay Police vs Fire hockey game, which was held where in the same arena where the L.A. Kings train at. I've never been to a hockey game before, so I didn't really know what to expect. Turns out the hockey puck moves a lot faster than I expected.
Luckily, I had the Nikon Z8 and had it set to face detection on the autofocus. I was also shooting at 20 frames per second, which is the fastest frame rate for RAW images. I could have switched to 120 frames per second, but I would only be able to shoot in JPG.
The focusing, combined with the fast frame rate and image stabilization helped me capture this image, which I thought had a good composition. If I had shot this with my D750, I'm not sure if I would have captured the moment quite as well.
Lens used was a Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G VR-II set at maximum aperture, ISO 5000 set to auto-ISO, and shutter speed of 1/1000 sec. White balance was set to auto, but was adjusted in Photoshop.
