Land of the Midnight Sun. Took this shot on July 21, 2019, at 12:02 AM off Ilulissat, Greenland’s coast, where the Sun never really dips below the horizon that time of year. The light was soft, almost dreamy. Used my Canon EOS 1DX with a 24-105mm lens, zoomed to 70mm, 1/60 shutter, ISO 100, f4. Got that vignette effect by tweaking the lens hood 180 degrees right in-camera. And no, I didn’t photoshop that unicorn float—it’s legit! The captain chucked it overboard, and it just floated into the frame. I was perched on the sailboat’s bow, no tripod, just holding steady.

This looks like something out of a strange dream, in a good way.
Thank you. It was a real pleasure to have this experience!
I like it! The different elements make it very interesting.
Thank you
That horsy thing on the right is so weird and goofy, it almost feels fake. I love this shot.
You don't believe in Unicorns? I waited for the inflatable to drift into the scene and fired away.
I love the soft light and color. The image without the plastic unicorn is otherwise timeless. The boat could be something from the 1800s. However, the unicorn wakes me out of my wonderful dream. Interesting element, but it ruins the mood for me.
Thank you so much for your kind words about the light and mood. I really appreciate your thoughtful perspective. You’re right that the image without the unicorn has a timeless, almost otherworldly feel. Including the inflatable unicorn was a deliberate choice to contrast that dreamy stillness with something playful and unexpected, a little reminder of the modern world floating into the frame. I knew it might disrupt the mood for some, but I’m always interested in where that tension between timeless beauty and contemporary life takes the viewer. Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts!
My least favorite thing is you explained how the unicorn got there. I love everything about this photo, the composition, the colors, I just wish you kept the mystery alive. Amazing work!!!
Thanks a ton for the love on the photo’s composition and colors, that means a lot! Totally get you on the unicorn; I might’ve let the cat out of the bag too early. Next time, I’ll keep that mystery sparkling! I appreciate the awesome feedback!
