I was asked to photograph graduating students from the Isha Foundation in Coimbatore, India. The shoot was planned so the students would have photographs they could use for themselves, whether on posters, flyers, or other platforms, to promote their journey as Bharatanatyam artists.

The Foundation’s vast campus is full of beautiful spots, but this corner caught my eye. The only drawback of it was it was almost completely in shadow, except for a streak of sunrise light falling across the floor. But it was just enough to bring the scene to life.

I used the Canon EOS R8, 50mm f/1.4 lens and a Godox AD100Pro as my key light and skipped the fill light to let the dancer’s form stand out against the darkness.

Absolutely lovely photo. Beautiful colours. Fantastic pose telling a wonderful story with beautiful composition.

But this is definitely hard light. Look how quickly is transitions from light to dark on his face. That must've been a relatively small light compared to him (or far away) to get that quick of a transition. Amazing shot, but wrong contest, imo.

Gave it 3 stars because the light and the shot is nice. But its not soft light
