Venice resists originality. It has been photographed millions of times, painted for centuries, written about in every language. To bring something genuine back from it requires a willingness to wait — to let the crowds recede, to let the hour grow late, to let the city become something other than a backdrop for tourists and gondoliers. This image was made in that other Venice: the one that exists after midnight, when the streets empty and the canals recover their stillness and their mystery. What remains when the performance is over is something closer to the city's true nature — ancient, melancholic, and extraordinarily beautiful.
The absence of people is not incidental. It took considerable time, waiting on the bridge above, for the canal to clear. When it did, what was left was the city itself: its light, its water, its stone, and its silence.

i gave this four stars only because the front right hand side i felt is too dark. otherwise great image.
I think you've really nailed this. Beautiful light in the background to pull your eye there, then we naturally follow the canal and get pulled to the other light in the foreground left, but the contrast on the tarp on the boat with the white and on the canal really pulls it all together. Then you catch hints of the lights up top and the stormy skies. I constantly just want to peruse the photo looking for all kinds of little hidden gems. Gorgeous photo!
