This image was taken during a stay on Madeira – an island I've been visiting and exploring photographically for years. I was already familiar with the location, as well as the subject, which I had captured before. But this time, I pursued a clear creative idea: a long exposure in which the clouds would condense into soft, flowing structures, lending the scene an almost otherworldly atmosphere.
To achieve this effect, I had equipped myself beforehand with a set of high-quality neutral density filters. On location, it required patience and timing: only on the third attempt did the right conditions present themselves – neither a cloudless sky nor dense fog, but precisely the dynamic cloud structure I had envisioned. At that moment, the image was finally captured – exactly as I had planned it.
The photo was taken with a compact travel camera (Panasonic GX80) in combination with the fast Samyang 12mm f/2.0 lens and a 10x neutral density filter. Post-processing was done in DxO Photolab. A subtle soft-focus effect underscores the desired mood of the image.
The result impressively demonstrates the potential of the Micro Four Thirds format: expressive, large-format prints are easily achievable. Acrylic prints already produced in the 80 × 60 cm format impress with their clarity and presence, as do exhibition prints in 50 × 40 cm.
In this image, the focus is not on technical accuracy, but rather on the visual impact: the tranquility, the movement in the sky, the understated, almost meditative atmosphere – a photographic moment that consciously distances the viewer from the hectic pace of everyday life. A perfect picture for a wall in a living room.
