Pentax K3 and a Pentax-Zeiss DA 1:2.8-4.0, 20 – 40mm zoom at 40mm, ISO 400. Post capture processing was with Lightroom and Photoshop. This image was made in Nova Scotia at a performance of Acadian music. It has been cropped for composition, with the neck of the fiddle crossing with the diagonal of the bow in a triangular relation between the rich reddish-brown color of the violin complemented by the purple color of the violinist’s shirt and the black of the performer’s hair. The black neck of the violin leads the eye to the highlighted face which is visually constrained by the same mop of black hair. The microphone, rather than being a distraction, gives the image the defining contextual message of a public performance. The image is sharp except for the hand and fingers, the motion of which provides gesture and prevents the image from being static.
