Apple has announced the latest version of its 14-inch MacBook Pro, now powered by the new M5 chip. The update brings faster performance, improved AI capabilities, and longer battery life, while keeping the same starting price of $1,599.

The Apple 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 builds on the previous M4 model with a new GPU design featuring a Neural Accelerator in each core, up to 3.5× faster AI performance, and up to 1.6× faster graphics performance. Apple claims this makes it the company’s biggest step yet for AI on Mac.

According to John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering: “M5 marks the next big leap in AI for the Mac and delivers a huge boost in graphics performance, accelerating demanding workflows for everyone from students to creatives, developers to business professionals.”

The laptop runs macOS Tahoe, includes faster storage, and features the same Liquid Retina XDR display, six-speaker sound system, 12 MP Center Stage camera, and port variety found in the previous generation.

Performance and AI Capabilities

The M5’s architecture introduces Apple’s next major jump in AI computing. Each GPU core includes a Neural Accelerator, helping boost on-device AI tasks such as image generation, local large language model (LLM) inference, and generative video enhancement.

Apple says that users will see improvements like:

  • Up to 7.7× faster AI video enhancement in Topaz Video

  • Up to 6.8× faster 3D rendering in Blender

  • Up to 3.2× higher frame rates in games compared to M1 models

  • Up to 2.1× faster code compilation in Xcode

For professional workloads, the M5 chip provides up to 20% faster multithreaded CPU performance compared to the M4. The 14-inch MacBook Pro can handle large datasets, complex 3D scenes, or multitasking across pro apps like Rhino, Notion, and Jira without slowdown.

macOS Tahoe and Apple Intelligence

The new macOS Tahoe includes enhanced productivity features, such as updated Spotlight search, improved Continuity with iPhone integration, and customizable visual elements through Liquid Glass.

Apple Intelligence expands with Live Translation across Messages, FaceTime, and the new Phone app, while developers can tap into the Foundation Model framework to integrate on-device AI capabilities into their apps. Privacy is emphasized, with all generative tasks running locally on the M5 chip.

Sustainability and Design

Apple continues its environmental initiative with the M5 model. The new 14-inch MacBook Pro uses 45% recycled content by weight, including 100% recycled aluminum in the enclosure, rare earth elements in the magnets, and cobalt in the battery. It ships in fully fiber-based packaging and is manufactured using 55% renewable electricity.

Conclusion

For photographers, filmmakers, and other visual professionals, the performance improvements are likely to be most noticeable in tasks like raw image import, AI-based upscaling, and GPU rendering. Faster storage and unified memory bandwidth make it easier to work with high-resolution footage or large image libraries directly on the device.

The expanded AI capabilities also open up new possibilities for creators using local diffusion models, automated editing tools, and machine-learning-driven photo enhancement, all without relying on cloud services.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 keeps Apple’s pro laptop line at the top of the market for mobile creative performance. While the design remains familiar, the internal improvements make this update meaningful for professionals seeking a balance of power, efficiency, and portability.
