If you're a photographer long enough, eventually you will be robbed. Today, with the help of Apple AirTags, you might be able to get your gear back.
I didn't think it would ever happen to me, until it did, and I happened to be filming.
Yes, you could simply throw an AirTag in your camera bag and hope for the best, but the thief can easily find it, or the thief might just steal a camera. To be fully protected, we heed to mask our AirTags, and attach them to each camera as well.
Elevation Lab AirTag Adhesive Mount
This simple screw down housing not only hides your AirTags, it also makes them 100% waterproof, and the adhesive on the back allows them to be mounted almost anywhere.
Elevation Lab AirTag TimeCapsule 10 Year Battery Case
The one year battery life of an Apple AirTag is impressive on it's own, but if you have multiple spread out all over your house, it can feel like you are always having to swap batteries. This battery case replaces the internal battery with 2 AA batteries giving you a waterproof capsule, that will go for 10 years between battery changes.
SmallRig Arca Plate With AirTag
If you already shoot with an "Arca-type" tripod head, the easiest way to attach an AirTag to your camera is in its plate. I tested 3 different tripod plates, but my favorite was the MD5422.
SmallRig Cage With Built In AirTag Slot
Most videographers like having a cage around their cameras and SmallRig now makes them with secret AirTag compartments. I particularly liked how easy it was to install this case and the fact that they include a magnetic tool that permanently lives on the bottom of the cage to help you tighten the cage to the camera, and remove the AirTag for battery swaps.
Elevation Lab AirTag Strap Mount
I personally don't use Arca plates or cages on my camera so my only other option was a strap mount. This one made by Elevation lab was the easiest to put on with two included self drilling screws that easily mount on a camera or backpack strap.
The bottom line is that Airtags, and all of these accessories are incredibly cheap. Go ahead and protect your gear while you still can. If you want to take things one step further, and disable the speaker in the AirTags so that it will be more difficult for thieves to find them, watch the video below.
