Canon Announces New RF-S 3.9mm f/3.5 STM Dual Fisheye Lens for APS-C VR Creation

Meanwhile, in VR news, today, Canon announced a new addition to its lens lineup, the new RF-S 3.9mm f/3.5 STM Dual Fisheye lens.

While they may make your camera look like something out of a science fiction film, these dual-lens systems facilitate more efficient production of VR video. This technology allows for a more immersive experience for the viewer, either on a traditional screen where they are able to move around within a frame or, even better, within a VR headset. The footage is then brought into Canon’s own software or third-party software, which blends the footage into a full virtual reality world. The idea is to create a world that viewers will be able to enter as opposed to just one they have to watch from a prescribed distance.

This is an APS-C stereoscopic VR lens with the ability to see a 144-degree wide-angle view to bring virtual reality production to the company’s EOS R7 body. This VR lens is designed with content creators in mind and promises additional handling options for run-and-gun shooters, vloggers, or gimbal shooters to be more mobile in their VR creation.

The lens offers:

  • One-shot AF and left/right focus adjustment
  • A first of its kind for non-L Series lenses: Air Sphere Coating to minimize ghosting
  • Rear filter holder that accommodates both 30.5mm screw-on filters as well as sheet (gelatin, polyester, etc.) filters

The Canon RF-S 3.9mm f/3.5 STM Dual Fisheye will hit shelves in June 2024 at a cost of $1,099.
