August challenge - Abstract (linear ICM)

Today's offering is s series of abstract images created by moving the camera in a single linear motion.

In cases where there are strong lines of contrast it is usual to follow those lines, the direction of motion (as well as the speed of movement) helping to determine the results.

Thoughts and/or questions are always welcomed.

These are quite nice. Pretty non objective and thought provoking. Nice work.

Thanks for your input Nathan. This type of work has a very niche audience but is always fun to try.

My linear motions ALWAYS contain squiggles, so I gave up trying.

Is your method using an ND filter to extend the exposure time, and during exposure have ~80% of the shutter time stationary and ~20% in motion, or a slow smooth steady motion during the entire exposure time?

These shots do typically require an ND filter (I use a 6 stop) if taken on a bright day to extend capture time.
To minimize squiggles use your body core with arms tucked in, panning before and after to create a uniform motion. It takes trial and (lots of) error to get the open/close timing right.
All these are continuous motion bar perhaps the 4th) - your stationary suggestion leads to another variance on ICM I call ‘imprinting’ which I’ll explain later

Love the harbor shot and the one after it. Like Dean, I always have a hard time when trying something like this. I get too many squiggles which usually makes it look terrible, haha! These all are rather nice. Nice work!

Thanks Kyle- see response to Dean. This does take a bit of practice moving the body, but not unlike using the core when panning.

These also tend to work out best when the motion follows the lines of contrast.

These are fantastic, Alan. You nailed everything - composition, color, lighting, steady motion ... These are worthy to hang on a wall. Do you print many of your photos for hanging?

Thanks so much for your kind response PG. I have printed many shots that hang on my wall, but not these specifically.
