August Challenge - Abstract (traditional)
A rock pool at the top of Turret Falls in the Grampians in western Victoria.
This image is not very abstract, you could say, but for me its graphic nature seems more like a study in forms and lines than a depiction of nature. It was late in the day, and I decided to echo the feeling.
I've long enjoyed visiting waterfalls where small details can provide an abstract(ish?) composition. I often prefer these "intimate landscapes" to the grand vista, which often looks clichéd, and rarely does justice to the splendour of a waterfall, with the sounds of the falling water, wind in the trees, often some birdsong, the sensation of the cool misty air, and the smell of the damp ground underfoot.
A few people think that the image should be cropped to shorten the white line of foam at the bottom, as it leads the eye out of the frame. It was a very difficult image to frame up, perched over the camera straddling the rocks with my legs and the tripod, barely able to see the image properly, but personally I'm still happy with the composition.

Hi Chris. I have tried swirling water like this myself in the past but without much success.
I think I agree with your thoughts on the composition. Cropping from the bottom might cause an imbalance in the image. That said, perhaps a slight crop might work.
In either case I really like this image and appreciate its strong graphical lines.
Excellent!
Thanks, Charles.
