Ruth Carll's picture

Stone Angel

This first image is getting low ratings on my profile. I was wondering if you all had suggestions. I have always like this but obviously something is needed. She originally had a wing (the other was broken off) but I didn't like it. Unfortunately no wider crop. I've posted a few other versions to spark your creativity. I don't mind downloads and playing! All feedback welcome!

Hi Ruth. TBH I have looked at this image a few times but failed to rate it as I'm conflicted. One side of me really likes the first image - I like the color patina and the dark background, the sense of age, but if just feels like something is missing to give it that 'wow' factor (and perhaps it doesn't need that?).
I think the image is slightly soft, so perhaps that's causing a bit of discord. Perhaps adding a touch of sharpness/clarity?

I'd love to see what others feel, and look forward to seeing edits.

I agreed all around! ;)

Now when I revisit and after Robert’s crop suggestion I feel there is too much weight at the bottom which pulls the eye away from the face.
I think this imbalance may contribute to the discord I feel?

I’d love to see the first at least with the bottom cropped by 20% or more.

I cannot pin point what it is either.

Me either! ;)

For me, because it's an image of artwork in which the artist has already created his/her own intent, the challenge is focusing on the element that highlights what you get out of it.

For me, it's all in the face and mood. To this point, I think the crop plays a big role. Took the liberty of editing yours - I realize you probably lose too much resolution to make it usable, so maybe it's something you can reshoot (assuming this is a possibiity)

This is interesting. It would make a cool banner. Thank you Robert!

Hi Robert, this is why these groups are so useful. I had completely overlooked cropping possibilities and really like your creative suggestion.

Yes, an interesting question with this one, Ruth. I think Robert makes some good points. I find it very hard to say why it doesn't appeal to me more. Partly I think the processing is somehow distracting, with that blotchy chalk-rubbed-in look here & there. Was it like that in reality? I think Robert's composition, and a crisper, contrasty, etching-like texture might work. Perhaps a background that isn't jet black - that would give it more depth, but that may not be what you want!

I've reworked Robert's crop, and done my own, retaining something of that wing - which does look a bit like some giant tumour! No wonder she ain't smilin'.

I think the 3rd one with the wing adds a distinct character to the overall composition. But I also love the first one...

I actually like the first one. It gives a sense of rawness and somehow being undone and bared for all to see. Perhaps too it reminds me of the Weeping Angels in Dr Who and they scare the life out of me even though it's fiction !!!
