What else, if anything, would you change? (other than composition, which is a sticking point for me)

It's a nice image and good job on retouching out the fence, but the contrast is a little bit too much for my taste.

I agree too much contrast/saturation. The dog coloring looks unnatural. Yes the composition is off. Not good having the Horizon hitting the dog where does. But then again it’s really hard to explain that to the dog. Go back and do what you just did but a few feet more ahead. LOL

You have catch lights in the dog eyes. I would pop them just a bit more.
