Winter Wonderland - Multnomah Falls, Oregon, today. Original file size is too big to upload here, hopefully the web-size version translates okay. CC welcome!
Snow day in Portland, Oregon today. Went out to the Columbia River Gorge to take some photos. One stop was here, at the never disappointing scenery of Multnomah Falls. Feedback and criticism welcome and appreciated!
iconic place, looks stunning in winter. great take on the scene. i do prefer the off angle i have seen way too many dead on shots im assuming drones aren't allowed as that would be a nice perspective. exposure is nice and you managed to retain all the details nice job
Thanks Joseph. The whole area out there looks amazing in a winter coat. I don't think drones are allowed, and in the chance they are, probably frowned upon. You can hike up to the top though, and get a very neat view looking straight down the falls and out over the gorge. Not quite the same as an aerial shot but still pretty cool :) Appreciate that feedback!
Interesting take on a classic image Nick. I like the way you have processed - the muted colors and teal (?) toning really gives a sense of cold.
I also feel that the fallen snow helps bring out the form of the landscape.
Exposure selection for the water is spot on, producing wonderfully silky threads.
In truth the image feels a little soft to me, especially in the foreground - if you could clone out the bright log in the lower-center of the image I think that would help.
Thank you very much for the kind words and insightful, thoughtful feedback! Yes, I've shot here many many times in all seasons. Always trying to do something slightly different than the time before. Snow might be my favorite look at this falls. I agree, its certainly a little soft. That may be due to the resolution upload here, but I also added a slight Orton effect that I don't think helped matters. Good idea with the log, I might try that. There were several branches that I wanted to clone out as well that distract me, which I didn't notice at first. Thanks again!
I love the vertical falls contrasted with the horizontal bridge. Really nice focal point. I wish the banks had more interest in them but not a lot you can do about that besides climbing them and writing your name in the snow!
Thanks! There is actually a metal fence where I am standing, no way to safely, or legally, get down to the banks below the falls.

Nice picture. I like the monochrome colour, composition and the softness of the water. There is only one spot in the picture that irritates my eye. Its the tree trunk in the water with snow on it. Its a white spot that my eyes stuck on and take my focus away from the beautiful bridge over the waterfall. Actually the lowest part of the picture is to bright and hard compare to the softness above the water.

What settings did you use? ND filter?
