Summer Storm -- July 5, 2019

This evening's thunderstorm has been absolutely beautiful! On one side, there's the rainbow that showed up between rain showers (almost a full double rainbow!), and then turn around and see the sunset peaking through the storm clouds as they move across the landscape. I originally launched the drone to catch a shot of the rainbow but as I turned to move back far enough to get the full rainbow in the shot, I caught the sunset. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to fly out far enough to get the full rainbow as it started raining again, but overall I feel pretty good about the shots I did get on such a tight flight time.

Looking at these images, especially the sunset, what would you change to make improvements? Composition? Color? Focus? Any and all CC is greatly appreciated!

SUCH BEAUTY

Thanks, Eugene!

Great pictures. I don't think I would change anything with the first one. On the second, maybe there needs to be some sort of land in the picture? there is a lot of negative space to the lower left.

Thanks, Shawn! With the 2nd photo, unfortunately, I couldn't get far enough away to capture the rainbow and the land under it... It started raining again as I was flying out, so I had to turn around and come home.

We're scheduled to have more storms this week, so I'm hoping to catch a better rainbow next time. In the meantime, do you think it would be better to crop the bottom?

Mark, beautiful photographs, thank you.

I think that the rainbow is a bit flat. You can try opening it in Photoshop, adding a curves adjustment layer. In the "RGB" curve increase the black slider a tiny bit, say to 10, 0.
In each of the "red", "green", and "blue" curves decrease the bright slider to where the histogram curve meets the base line, say 135, 254.
Fiddle until the colours look nice. Don't over do this or you will land up with a picture that is too bright.

Try a thin neutral colour frame.

I would not crop at all.

Good shots Mark

Arthur knows rainbows are hard to get right as strange as that seems for capturing light. Are you using a CPL for that?
Here's one that I was able to catch yesterday despite being totally locked into work. I happened to look outside to see how the day was going and voila.

Thank you, Chris! Unfortunately, I didn’t have the CPL when I flew the drone out to get the shot. I think it could have made a real difference here.

That’s a beautiful rainbow you posted! What a nice surprise to break up the monotony of the work day!

yes, the drone has to get what it can in the moment. for land shot, if you get a chance, play with a CPL and see what you get.

Thanks, Arthur! I’ll definitely go back and play around with the colors of the rainbow and try your suggestions. This was my first rainbow shot not taken with a phone, so it’s been an experimental piece for me.

For a first round, its a great shot. I have my first rainbow shots and out of self respect will never post them, lol
