If you find yourself struggling, one thing that can help shake you loose is to simply zoom in — sometimes by a lot. Landscape photographers frequently default to using wide angle lenses, and there is certainly nothing wrong with that inclination, but that can also lead to messy or overly busy compositions. And since you can't control the placement of the elements in the frame, your next best choice is to simply exclude them by employing a narrower angle of view.
