Brown bear (Ursus arctos)

Sitting in the wooden hide as the northern sun dipped below the pines, I tracked this Eurasian brown bear moving through the Finnish taiga. These apex predators prepare for their long winter torpor by foraging intensely during the autumn gold hour. I dialed down the exposure compensation to preserve the intense rim lighting outlining its thick fur, holding my breath as the massive animal stepped out from behind a silver birch trunk, its heavy paws shifting silently through the dry moss.
