The Wednesday Rundown 9.15.10

Hello everyone and welcome to the Wednesday Rundown. This weekend I learned one of my weaknesses, being able to give direction. Wow, this is something I got the chance to learn while shooting a friends engagement shoot. While working as a second shooter the main photographer directs everything and makes it look easy. I finally got the ball rolling a bit and with some more practice I will feel more at ease while helping couples or even just a model strike a pose. I have found a couple videos on posing for photographers and models. contactfstoppers@gmail.com
Reid Gower Spends 6 Months Filming Timelapse

In case you haven't heard the name Reid Gower before, he's the Canadian guy who started making ad campaigns to promote NASA because they can't actually spend taxpayer money to do it themselves. He just released a timelapse that he spent 6 months working on, titled Natural Phenomena, and it's got a few interesting twists that others haven't had until now.

[Gear] Accessories For Better Audio On Your DSLR Video Projects

Hey there everyone, my name is Mike, and I’m one of the new Fstoppers crew. Today I’m bringing you up to speed on some audio gear you might find useful for your video shoots. Besides using an H4N to record second-system sound, what else can you do to get better audio for your video projects when shooting on a DSLR? This question plagues a number of video shooters I know, sometimes because of budget, or simple the need to keep their kit as small and portable as possible. Click to see the full post here.

Adobe is Hoping to Realize Their Dream of a Connected Creative Professional, Expands Cloud Functionality

Originally, the idea of a “creative cloud” was difficult for many to grapple when it was first announced. When I spoke to him about a year ago, Photoshop mastermind Jeff Chien understood how we felt: Adobe couldn’t just put the software in the cloud and actually expect it to be an improvement. It had to mean more. Since then, Adobe has been trying to get to the point where the public would be on the same page as them in this regard. They might be getting there with today’s announcements, which are expanding the connectivity of your accounts in CC in ways that finally make the CC model begin to make sense.

[BTSV] Photoshoot With Hockey Legend Trevor Linden

Photographer Dave Hamilton takes us behind the scenes on his latest shoot with hockey legend, Trevor Linden. This video is very informative and well produced - including a lighting diagram for each of the different setups. Aiming to get that perfect cover shot for Vancouver View Magazine's April 2012 issue, Dave was able to get some nice shots using his Canon 5D Mark II.

[Video] The Canon 5DM2 Vs The New Canon C300

Just a few weeks ago Canon announced the new C300 video camera to join the professional video world. Many people were confused because the specs didn't seem that much better than the 5DM2 but the price was way higher ($20k). In the video below Jonathan Yi does a great job of showing many of the benefits of the C300. If I had a little bit more money I would be tempted to buy one of these myself.
How to Photograph Small Rooms on a Yacht

In this video tutorial, I'm going to show you how I photographed the bedrooms on a $12 million yacht. Although the rooms are large for a boat, they are very small compared to your average bedroom.

Review of the Sony FE 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS

A 300mm lens with an aperture of f/2.8 is a wonderful lens. But it’s often large and heavy, or so it used to be. Although the diameter of the lens is unchanged, Sony managed to keep the weight within acceptable limits. It makes the FE 300mm GM OSS a great tool to work with.

Fstoppers and Movember: Help Us Change the Face of Men's Health

For those of you who don't know what Movember is, Movember (the month formerly known as November) is a mustache growing charity event held during November each year that raises awareness and funds for men's health. What's Hindering Your Photography?

It’s not an uncommon thing to see photographers being stuck in an endless loop of un-productivity. If you look at photography a little more seriously than as a hobby then you may have been looping in this cycle for so long as well.

Give Your Light Trails Wings

Light trails are a perennial favorite for long exposure shooters, and a right of passage for any budding photographer. So why restrict yourself to cars in a street scene when the sky's your limit?

LaCie, CalDigit, and Promise Announce New Thunderbolt 3 Desktop Storage Systems at NAB 2016

A new 12-bay storage solution by LaCie, four- and eight-bay systems by CalDigit, and four-, six-, and eight-bay systems by Promise announced Monday at NAB 2016, all support Thunderbolt 3, even before Apple has a single device that supports the protocol. That shouldn't be the case after Apple computer announcements expected this summer (or perhaps through a refresh any moment); and some PCs already have Thunderbolt 3 support. But with mass adoption already around the corner, these three companies are showing they're ready to take on the transition to the new standard.

The Importance and Real Reason for Attending Industry Events like PDN's Photo Plus Expo

Last weekend was PDN’s Photo Plus Expo, and like a lot of east coast photographers I was in attendance. It seems like every year photo conferences get bigger and better drawing in massive crowds and yet there are still photographers who don't see any value in them. It makes me wonder if people understand and are taking full advantage of these events.

Day Three of Photo Plus Expo in New York City

This weekend, Fstoppers has been at PhotoPlus Expo in New York City to give an inside look at all the new products being announced to the photography community. Today, we were able to look into Sigma, Canon and Nikon's new product lines.

Just like the Atomos Samurai and Ninja Blade, the Shogun allows for 422 10-bit images straight off the camera recorded right to SSD (or RAIDed HDD) in 4K HD ProRes, Avid DNxHD, or RAW Cinema DNG.
