50mm lenses are some of the most popular out there, and they range from sub-$100 f/1.8 versions to well over $2,000 for professional-level f/1.2 versions. However, Meike makes a 50mm f/1.2 lens for all popular full frame mirrorless mounts that costs less that $400, making it a potentially appealing option for photographers and filmmakers who love bokeh but not the money it often costs. This excellent video review takes a look at the lens and the image quality and performance you can expect from it in practice.
Coming to you from Wes Perry, this great video review takes a look at the Meike 50mm f/1.2 lens. At about $350, the 50mm f/1.2 is an intriguing option for a lot of photographers who love ultra-thin depth of field but who do not want to shell out $2,000. With 12 elements in 7 groups and multi-layer coatings, the lens still brings some advanced design features. Of course, what is potentially the biggest drawback is the lack of autofocus, but the lens compensates for that with a long-throw focusing ring, and with the advanced focus aids built into modern mirrorless cameras, as long as you are not photographing fast action, the lack of autofocus is not as significant a drawback as it was in past years. Check out the video above for Perry's full thoughts on the lens.
Hi Wes. Really enjoy your YT channel and reviews. Enjoyed this one too.
There are some really interesting creative (and standard if we look at Viltrox, NiSi & TT Artisans) lenses coming out of China at the moment. Laowa (I've had 3 of their lenses, all good) are a great example.
My only other comment was I thought it unfair (though I can see it's the only way you can include MF lenses in your chart) was to give 0/10 to a MF lens for lack of AF ! We wouldn't rate Zeiss Loxia or Voigtlander lenses that way ;)
Cheers !
Thanks! But I would absolutely rate a Zeiss or Voigtlander that way 😂
Actually I might give Some points there for having a chipped lens that allows for auto focus zooming and the like. Always frustrating that these cheap lenses don’t spend the extra $10 to put a chip in. 🤦🏻♂️
