Mike Kelley's Where Art Meets Architecture 2 Behind The Scenes continues today with Episode 5. In this episode we continue shooting the "tree house" from last week, and Patrick breaks Mike's rib in a go-cart.
Mike only works through one image in this episode and it happens to be one of my favorites of the tutorial. Mike framed a shot away from the house and photographs it with Los Angeles in the background. To capture a balanced image he waited for the ambient light of the sky to drop enough that it was even with the lights of the city and the house. To make the property stand out he lit a fire (which we later learned was against the rules) and he light painted the foreground with his trusty, and overpriced, GL1.
The next part of this episode highlights the most unreliable piece of gear we own, the Rode lav microphone cable. In all seriousness, I think we have had at least 10 of these cables go out on us. Rode has replaced a few and we've paid $38/cable for a few of them. When the first one broke I thought it was a fluke. When the second one broke I figured we had purchased a bad batch. After 5 cables had broken I realized that they were just extremely fragile. Wrapping them around the transmitter seems to be the worst thing you can do to them. We're in a bad situation because we love the sound of these mics and more importantly we love the wind dampening add-ons that we can't easily find for the Sennheiser mics. If you have any other lav mic suggestions we would love to hear them.
This episode wraps up with Patrick injuring Mike in a go-cart race. Mike never does go to the hospital so we aren't 100% sure that he broke his rib but this injury will haunt him for the next month as we continue filming this tutorial in Hawaii.
