Night Fishing and Partying on Hangzhou’s West Lake
It was well after sunset when I saw this scene developing, and me without a tripod. Through Sony Imaging’s Pro Support Program I had borrowed their exceptional 24-105 f4 G Master lens for the trip expecting confirmation that I would add it to my quiver.
The high ISO capabilities of the latest cameras are exceptional and I had been shooting low light scenes handheld for quite a while with excellent results. I set my Sony A7RIII at f4 which at ISO 20,000 allowed me to shoot at 1/250th, a necessary shutter speed because of the movement of the boats. And then I waited for the scene to come together.
With the invention of DXO’s amazing PureRaw, I have been able to completely eliminate the noise inherent at ISO 20,000. This yielded a noise free, exceedingly sharp image without the annoying artifacts ingrained–pun intended–by processing in the past.
And I kept the 24-105.
