I stumbled upon this scene while wandering down a quiet road in Oban, just as the storm clouds began to gather overhead. The air was thick with the scent of rain, and the wind rustled the leaves in a gentle whisper. As I rounded the bend, this little cottage appeared, bathed in the soft, warm glow of its lights, standing in stark contrast to the brooding sky above.
At that moment, I felt a profound sense of peace. The cottage seemed like a beacon of warmth and safety amidst the encroaching darkness, a reminder of the simple comforts of home. I stood there for a while, taking in the vivid colours of the flowers, the darkening sky, and the light spilling from the windows, feeling a deep connection to the tranquillity and resilience of this place. I knew I had to capture this feeling - the contrast between the storm and the sanctuary - and share it with others.
This photo was taken just after sunset when the light was low and soft. I didn't have a tripod, so I had to adapt to the conditions. I managed to capture this scene using my Samyang 14mm lens at f/2.8, ISO 100, and a 1/20-second shutter speed. Given the lack of a tripod, I chose these settings to let in as much light as possible without a long exposure that might blur the image. The challenge of capturing this image under these conditions made the experience even more memorable.
