Ruapehu star trails, single exposure.
I had planned this image and taken the test shots back in 1996, but then the mountain erupted. It took 9 years for the crater lake to fill back and for the right conditions for me to be able to get the shot. I needed a clear, windless and moonless night. The walk up is around 4 hours involving crampons and ice axe. The image is taken with a Canon F1n in full manual (no battery) with a 24mm lens using Provia 100f slide film. It’s a single exposure of 10minutes at f8 to get the last of the sunlight on the summit then during the exposure I opened up to F2.8 to get the star trails for the next 50mins. The light in the tent was on for around 30 seconds. Image taken of Crater Lake, Ruapehu at 2600m and the temp dropped off the bottom of my thermometer at -15 degrees Celsius.
Equipment used now.
Canon 6d and a Canon 60d (Self modded to full spectrum for IR and astro photography)
