I was photographing the Parade of 1,000 Flags in Ridgecrest, CA, a parade honoring those who lost their lives on 9/11, when I spotted this little girl waving a small flag. I had to maneuver through the crowd until I could get a clear shot of her expression, which was intense, mirroring how I felt about the event. Having watched the towers burn from the office windows of the clinic where I worked in NY on 9/11, this parade is very special to me and I photographed it often.
The harsh sun made it hard not to blow out her skin tone, and she kept waving the flag in front of her face. Nikon D90, 112mm, 1/400sec, f/10, ISO 200. Adjusted to black and white, cleaned up a dust bunny or two, small crop, but no other processing.
