I captured this image in Herculaneum during a recent visit to Naples. Nearby, a young couple sat close together, absorbed in their own world, beside the storage area where victims of the AD 79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius were unearthed.

To my eyes, that quiet juxtaposition where love unfolds in the presence of this ancient tragedy. The weight of history lingers, yet life persists, tender, immediate, and unchanged across millennia.

“Two Thousand Years Apart” reflects on the fragile continuity of human experience, where love endures despite the passage of time and the certainty of mortality.
