This photo is part of my ongoing Seasons of the Great Salt Lake project. I started it because the lake is a place I keep coming back to, both as a photographer and just as someone who cares about the landscape and wildlife that depend on it.

In this image, the bison are standing in front of a huge stretch of exposed lakebed. From a distance, it almost looks like desert, but this is part of the Great Salt Lake's receded shoreline from the vantage of Antelope Island State Park. At one point the water of the Great Salt Lake filled from the shore where I stood to the urban center in the distance. I wanted the bison in the frame because they help give a sense of scale to just how much open ground there is now.

A lot of this project has been about returning to the same places and watching how they change. The light, weather, haze, water levels, and wildlife are never quite the same twice. Sometimes the hardest part is simply waiting for everything to line up in a way that tells the story I am trying to tell.

I made this image with a Sony A7RV with the 200-600 G lens so I could keep my distance from the bison while still pulling the landscape together visually.
