How to crop LAVA

Sharing a close-up I got of the recent lava flow in Iceland. A little singed but I came out relatively unscathed ;) Looking to eventually make a series, but for now will likely print just this one. Feel free to share thoughts if any on a particular aspect ratio here you find more appealing and why. They are 3:2, 16:9 (original was a still from video), and 2:1 pano. Maybe I'm splitting hairs.

So fortunate to see and photograph Iceland's latest lava flow. Can't describe how humbling and almost spiritual it is to witness the youngest land on Earth being born, especially as a volcanologist in training. The power of the Earth 🌎 beneath our feet is virtually incomprehensible.

Iceland is such a gorgeous place to visit and now with the lava flow it is even more so. I like the last one guess that is the 2:1 crop

I completely agree about Iceland John. Thanks for the feedback!

Interesting, Thomas! Better than the drone snatched by a gator, before exploding in its mouth. If you are a volcanologist in training, I can imagine this must be extra special.

To my eye, the middle image is the best balanced composition, despite the dark bit top right you've cropped out in the others. It's also presumably what you visualised when you triggered the shutter, which I think may say something.

BTW why stick with arbitrary numerical ratio frame proportions? Why not crop any edge until it looks right? I note people here often post such crops. Does this reflect suggested or restricted options in your software? I'm curious.

Thanks for the feedback Chris! The second image as you pointed out, I too thought was balanced because you get more context by seeing the edge of the flow lobe. I try to crop to exact proportions for printing purposes. This is not necessary of course if you don't plan on printing or you can simply get a custom print, trim it, and custom frame.

I love shooting lava abstracts. great shot.

Thanks Cody! It was so incredible to see this live

Hi Thomas, First all being there and photo-shoot itself is an achievement. Since you asked, image 3 in horizontal format appeals me more among given 3.

Thank you for the feedback Vijay! Much appreciated!
